NASCAR Announces Race Start Times for 2017 Season

Seventeen National Series Events Move Closer to Primetime

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 27, 2016) – NASCAR, along with FOX Sports and NBC Sports, today announced 2017 race start times and network coverage for the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR XFINITY Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series – based on the previously released schedule dates. Through collaborative efforts with its broadcast partners, race teams and tracks, NASCAR was able to finalize full 2017 start times for all three national series almost six months earlier than in recent seasons.

Seventeen national series events will start closer to primetime, helping to bring NASCAR’s photo finishes and close, side-by-side racing to larger audiences. Seventeen NASCAR Cup Series points races will air on broadcast television next year, including the DAYTONA 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on FOX; and the Brickyard 400 and the NASCAR Cup Series championship race, the Ford EcoBoost 400 from Homestead-Miami Speedway, on NBC.

“It’s our responsibility, collectively as an industry, to ensure the sport is healthy, strong and growing by delivering great racing in a way that best meets the needs of our fans,” said Steve Herbst, senior vice president, broadcasting and production at NASCAR. “Earlier insight on start times benefits not only fans, but also our teams and tracks, as it provides more opportunities to plan travel and to purchase race tickets.”

Changes to next season’s schedule include three date shifts from the 2013 edition: Darlington Raceway will hold its race a month earlier (April 11), while the first Iowa Speedway event is now slated for May 18 (it had previously been held in June). Texas Motor Speedway’s date moved one week earlier in the calendar to April 4; the Texas and Darlington date changes coincide with the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series schedule released earlier this week. Chicagoland Speedway’s standalone event on July 19 will return to a night race for the first time since hometown driver Justin Allgaier won there in 2011.

Daytona International Speedway hosts the season opener on Feb. 22 while the series finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway is set for Nov. 15. Six “standalone” dates are also included on the 2014 schedule. These races have been a major part of the series’ identity throughout its history, putting the spotlight squarely on series regulars vying for the championship. Iowa Speedway will host two standalones (May 18 and Aug. 2), along with Chicagoland, Kentucky Speedway (Sept. 20), Road America and Mid-Ohio.

Mears to Finish The Season At Homestead

The rumors and guesses were aswirl about whether who's driving what when in regards to Casey Mears and Mark Martin.

Our first clue to who's doing what would be Mark Martin's following statement in regards to the Homestead race:

• "I'll be home on the couch with the remote."

Hmm... that's my first clue that Casey Mears will indeed be finishing out his tenure at Hendrick Motorsports for the 2008 year. This is due to his not able to work out his schedule to drive the Richard Childress Racing entry for the last race or so.

Mears is headed to the No. 07 Chevy for 2009.

I think it's good to finish out his season in proper fashion and see just what he can do with the equipment before years' end. Casey Mears finished 14th in last weekends Dickies 500 at Texas.

The 36-race schedule begins with the Daytona 500 on Feb. 17 and ends Nov. 16 at Homestead-Miami Speedway

The major shifts had already been announced, namely that the first five races will be run consecutively, unlike this year when Cup teams got a week off after the season's second race, at California Speedway. (That means we, the fans, get it 5 weeks in a row straight!!)
