NASCAR made it a point to say that Kyle could qualify for the Chase if he made it into the top-30 in points.
Folks started responding to this announcement, questioning the special circumstances allowed for Kyle.
But if you remember, this is not a new thing. There were rules in place that separated the full-time races from the part-time drivers like the start and parks. Now it's true that Kyle was out for rehab, but he went out as a full-time driver and returned as that same full-timer.
Despite his status as a full-time driver, NASCAR recognized that he was only not in every race because of an injury and not by choice. Yet they still are enforcing the rule that he needs to be in the top-30 in points to make it into the Chase officially.
To me, that's not a bad thing. It's the rules and it is not a surprise.
