In what seems to be the most confusing bit of news to date, it's being reported on AutoWeek that Bobby Labonte is headed to helm the No. 8 car under the Earnhardt Ganassi Racing banner. (EGR)
This pushes Almirola back into the shadows instead of behind the wheel.
Labonte will be driving with Martin Truex Jr. (The No. 1 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet) and Juan Pablo Montoya (The No. 41 Target Chevy) but no sponsor has been noted yet.
As far as I can tell, this is probably the best thing to happen for EGR. With Labonte's experience, this will definitely showcase just how on top of their game EGR really is, because of all the available drivers, Labonte is their best option. They obviously thought so if they bumped Almirola that fast.
On the other hand, I secretly feel bad for Bobby who got shoved out the door in the Petty absorption. Bobby was starting to get somewhere with that lagging No 43 car and just as he was about to probably capitalize on the momentum, poof. And now if he wants to race, he has to take the best offer / seat that is available.
Well, at least now I can quietly root for the No. 8 car once again.
