Bruton Smith Threatens to Build Another Track

Nearly a half-century after he built his first speedway near Charlotte, Bruton Smith has threatened to shut it down and build another one in the region.

The prospect of building a new track emerged from a blow-up between Smith and Concord leaders over a proposed drag-racing strip at Lowe's.

Smith wants to build the $60 million strip and began grading the site last month. But the Concord City Council, concerned about noise in nearby neighborhoods, on Monday unanimously voted to change the zoning to ban drag strips.
