A classic battle looks like it's starting to take shape at the top of the NASCAR Cup standings since four of the top five drivers in the current standings are former NASCAR Sprint Cup champions.
This is just about as good as it gets for it being this early in the season. Then again, we here at NBaP know it is early in the season and we've seen what happens as things hit the final leg of the season! (Can we say Kyle Busch?)
In these top 5, we have four-time champion (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001) Jeff Gordon leading the pack.
Three-time series champion Jimmie Johnson.
The 2004 champion Kurt Busch, who didn't make much noise last year after all his owner points were wasted on Sam Hornish.
The ever hungry two-time (2002 and 2005) champ, Tony Stewart is fifth in points. With Tony sitting up top like this, and doing as well as he is, I am a betting man that he is very hungry to make point and prove that new teams are viable for contention when they're done right.
The total number of points separating Gordon from Stewart is a mere 216.

Standings Shuffle After Loudon
Big changes for a few drivers in the standings today after the Sylvania 300 at Loudon.
Kyle Busch dropped to 8th, 74 points behind the leader, losing all his bonus win points advantage pretty quickly today after all his bad luck.
Greg Biffle moved up 6 spots to 3rd, 30 points behind the leader(s) after winning the race.
Leaders? Yep: Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards are tied for first in the standings for the moment while Matt Kenseth, after having a wreck, sits in 12th, 177 points behind the lead spots.

Standings and Chase Bubble Headed Into Richmond
Well, this is it. The last chance for a few folk to get their behinds in gear and get into the chase.
At least they'll be able to say they were in the chase, behind Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson and Carl Edwards!
With that said, take a look at the spread of points around 12th spot. No one from 6th on back can make any mistakes this weekend if they want to keep their spot where they're at.
Where as those guys in 13th and 14th need, David Ragan and Kasey Kahne both need to win the race and let luck lay where it may. As they say, do the Jeremy Mayfield.
The most obvious question: Can Clint Bowyer and Denny Hamlin keep it together to stay in the chase, for what it's worth?

Driver Point Standings After Daytona July 2008
Restrictor plate racing took it's toll and then some, but regardless of the venue, the same 'ol drivers were up there fighting for the lead positions, barring a few spins off of front bumpers, driver switches for a nasty flu and just some other things.
Despite spinning on the last lap, Jeff Gordon didn't lose any spots, Burton lost one and Biffle and Stewart lost three spots from their own situations.
The big spot climber was Matt Kenseth, moving up 4 spots into 9th.
As you can see, at the moment, from about 7th (Denny Hamlin) on back, it's a tight race for that 12th position. Anyone have a bad day and it's out of the top 12, just like that.
Traditionally, this has been Tony Stewarts time of year to kick it in gear (I don't mean buying into new teams or leaving his own), but you have to wonder if that's having any affect what so ever on him... more than likely, I'd like to think it's not. But that's me. I've been wrong before... once I think.

The Chase Bubble - After New Hampshire
Who'd a thunk that New Hampshire would affect the points as much as it did?
After NH, Biffle, Kahne, Bowyer and Kenseth all dropped a spot, but the impact is more on Kenseth since he slid out of the top 12. The saving grace with that is that he is only 15 points out of the Chase Bubble.
Everyone from Biffle (8th) on back needs to stay on their toes, as Tony did by pulling off the finish he did. It wasn't a win, but it was good enough to help push him away from that dark looming lump of the bubble.
The big chargers in the standings were Martin Truex Jr., and Kurt Busch. Truex moved up 3 spots and is only 71 points from the bubble while Kurt moved up 4 spots to 18th, but unless he can start plugging top 5's, that 222 point deficit is looking pretty big from his spot right now.
